We have family out in southwest, Virginia but Im still learning so much about this beautiful area! So many fun, hidden gems, many of which are right off the highway 81.
Whether you're heading to Tennessee, the Smoky Mountains, or just looking for a weekend getaway, Abingdon is full of small-town charm and family-friendly adventures.
1. Walk the Historic Downtown
One of my favorite things about Abingdon is how walkable it is. The brick sidewalks, historic buildings, local boutiques, and friendly atmosphere make it easy to explore—even with little ones in tow.
Our kids loved simply wandering around, looking in shop windows, seeing the flowers and finding fun surprises along Main Street. It feels like stepping back into a slower pace of life.
2. Ride or Walk the Virginia Creeper Trail
If your family enjoys being outdoors, you can't miss the Virginia Creeper Trail. Families can rent bikes and ride portions of this famous rail trail or simply enjoy a short walk from downtown.
Even if you don't have time for the full ride, walking a small section lets kids burn off some energy while parents soak in the beautiful mountain scenery. The trail is one of the area's biggest attractions and is suitable for a wide range of ages.
There were parts of this trail that were closed after hurricane damage, but this particular part (white top to Damascus) is due to open back up in March of 2027. Updated information can be found here. We rode this back in 2022 with our 10 month old and it ended up being the best day! There are several bike shops to rent from - We used Adventure Damascus and they took us up the mountain and we cruised our way down! They had everything we needed to rent at the bike shop! I would advise to pack and lunch but there is a little store about halfway through. A lot of this trail is shaded which is great for the downhill ride! I haven’t been on other parts of the trail personally but I can imagine the whole thing is just as beautiful!
3. Catch a Show at the Barter Theatre
The historic Barter Theatre is the nation's longest-running professional theater and even offers productions designed specifically for children through the Barter Players. It's a fun way to introduce kids to live theater in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. There is also a kids program that does shows!
4. Grab a Family-Friendly Meal
One thing Abingdon does really well is food. You'll find everything from pizza to barbecue to locally owned cafés. For our quick visit we ate lunch at the Tin Roof Kitchen and the burgers were amazing! Kids enjoyed wood fire pizza- while we waited we were able to walk around Abingdon Commons- they had the cutest kids section, along with coffee and little bakery area, among other things! There was a BBQ place right beside this but closed on Sundays and Mondays.
If you're traveling with kids, it's easy to find casual restaurants where everyone can find something they'll enjoy. After dinner, treat everyone to ice cream or a sweet treat while strolling through downtown.
5. Slow Down
Sometimes the best part of a road trip stop isn't checking attractions off a list.
It's sitting on a bench with an ice cream cone.
Finding a good deal at a thrift store!
Watching your kids run through a grassy park.
Browsing a local bookstore.
Taking family photos on the historic streets.
Abingdon gives you permission to slow down for a little while.
Another favorite and great for a quick stop or weekend visit is the playground at the Harry L. Coomes Recreation Center - Its the biggest playground ever! It was a huge hit with the kids!! It was opened in fall of 2025. The rec center offers memberships but the playground is open to the public! We did use the restrooms, which I assume are open during operating hours! There are tennis courts and a bike pump track! and lot of open space for running around. If you have kids, I would say this is a must visit! I will say that this playground is in direct sunlight but there is a small portion that is shaded.

Our Tips for Visiting with Kids & packing list
Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Bring a stroller if you have younger children—the downtown area is very walkable.
Pack water if you're planning to explore the Creeper Trail (& snacks). My favorite refillable water bottle keeps water cold for hours!!
Give yourself at least 2–4 hours to enjoy the town, or stay overnight if your schedule allows.
For every trip with kids I recommend giving them a camera (Like this one!) there is nothing better than seeing a trip from their perspective!
Final Thoughts
As parents, we're always looking for stops that are more than just another fast-food exit off the interstate. Abingdon is exactly that. It's beautiful, easy to explore, full of history, and offers just enough adventure to make the kids excited while still being relaxing for the adults.
If you're planning your next family road trip through Virginia, don't just drive past Abingdon. Take the exit. You might find it's one of the most memorable parts of your trip.
